QUESTION: First Nation core collection

question / pregunta:

Do you know of any resources that provide a general list of "core items" for a reference collection in a First Nation library? The Public Library Catalogue will probably not do the trick. Thanks for your help!

Answers

There is a presentation on this very topic at the preconference of the 2007 Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museum Conference in Oklahoma City, October 23-25. While it is too late to recommend attending this conference (it is in fact sold out!), if you look at the details of the preconference presentation ”Collection Development for Tribal Libraries in the Electronic Age” you can find a list of the presenters, and by looking for contact information through their related institutions you can find professionals to reach out to for help.

Another resource for information and contacts would be the website of the American Indian Library Association. This affiliate of the American Library Association has published a volume called Library Services to Indigenous Populations which would probably be an important start in developing a First Nations core collection.

Finally, The University of British Columbia Library has a page of Subject Resources for First Nations and an extensive page of links for First Nations Libraries and Librarianship which includes a section on Building First Nations Libraries.
