I. NCOR Conference report back
radical reference presented two workshops Fact -checking and FOIA and "Free Info, Free Space! Using your public library" overflowing crowds, good workshops
This discussion led to discussion about organizing in New Orleans and the need of anti-oppression trainings, and discussion about conference and presentations in general:
we should tailor our workshops to the mission of the conference
we should partner with individuals and/or organizations to do presentations that are relevant
we could survey to find out what folks want to know
maybe an online survey form?
II. Library Education Forum Report back
benefit drew more participants than the forum did
disappointment expressed with low turnout, started off kind of flustered
discussions were really good and helpful
folks seemed psyched to be there
participants were responsible for putting up the notes
discussions about some kind of print or online publication/journal to come out of the conference. Maybe a published conference proceedings? Maybe an annual peer-reviewed, student edited journal on library education?
This discussion led to a discussion about a Rad Ref publication in general. Would it be online? A blog? A peer-reviewed journal?
Another idea was to have a regular column in the Unabashed Librarian about library education.
What's next for the LEF? We should have had LJ and AL there to cover it. If this happens again in the future, it would be important to send press release out especially to these two pubs much earlier.
Maybe there should be a conference assessment meeting?
III. Melissa went to New Orleans in February- spent time with Common Ground folks
they are hooking people up with relief work
there are orientations every night for volunteers
lots of house gutting they seem to need skill shares on skills we (Rad Ref) don't really have
volunteers were generally (although not entirely) young and white and anarchist
seems easier to connect with Common Ground folks than Critical Resistance folks
suggestion to create some kind of pathfinder/bibliography about the history of oppression/racism in New Orleans
are there ways we can use our specific skills? Putting together info packets, maybe on demolition and disaster zones etc or whatever else folks seem to be needing
we could arrange a medic training here in NY to help common ground folks when we get there
IV. New Orleans discussion led into a discussion of ALA
dorm housing is available for $45/night
Madelein Albright uggh! Someone's working on a flyer. Maybe palm cards?
Skill shares could happen at the SRRT Booth in exchange for time staffing the SRRT table
Possible skill share/discussions eating well/scamming food at conferences? Knitting? Library education discussion?
Iron rail infor shop has public computers available and might be a good place to do rad ref skill shares.
V. Grassroots Media Conference
feedback that we were trying to cover too much in workshops
the How to Research Like a Librarian had something like 50 participants
hard to know what level to address folks on since there is a range of skill levels among participants.
Idea to get "lesson plans" from our workshops together and posted on the website from our presentations
VI. Baltimore Radical Book Fair
Is the week after ALA
Jenna's going to present on 'zines
Carrie from Maryland might be available to do a gov docs presentation??
VII. The NLG asked for help compiling a directory of resources and organizations/ radical spaces in NYC
