Question: What Does Each Letter of EEUU Stand For?

I am independently studying Spanish. And I understand that EE.UU. indicates Estados Unidos(Unites States). But what does each individual letter stand for in EE.UU.?

I am not a Spanish speaker, but I am an Italian speaker and many acronyms in foreign languages do not translate literally with a word for each letter. EEUU is used as Estates Unidos is plural (as opposed to saying United State singular).

Unfortunately, I could not find any authoritative sites, though naturally there may be many such sites in Spanish language.

Apparently the doubled letter indicates a plural, as when in English indexes we use "p. 17" but "pp. 17-24". This according to "About.com":
